Overview

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN KAZAKHSTAN ?

The Republic of Kazakhstan

The country’s capital was once called Astana, but it was renamed Nursultan in 2019 to celebrate the country’s first president who resigned that year.

Kazakhstan is ranked as the 9th largest country in the world, spreading across 2,724,900 km2 (1,052,089 sq mi).

The country borders several Central Asian countries (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan), and also shares borders with the European continent. Thus, this vast country is located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe. The total length of the Kazakh borders exceeds 12,012 km (7,463 miles).

Once a steppe country inhabited by nomadic Turkic horsemen, it was first part of the Russian Empire, then of the former USSR before becoming independent in December 16, 1991.

With a population of 19,245,793 million inhabitants (2020 data), Kazakhstan is the second most populous country in Central Asia after Uzbekistan. Kazakhs represent 68% of the population. Russians and Uzbeks are also important minorities in the country.

Almaty, the former capital of the country, accounts for most of the Kazakh history and is one of the most visited cities by travelers. Its current capital is Nursultan (formerly Astana), a modern city.

The official language is Kazakh. Russian is also a commonly spoken language in the country.

The Kazakh economy is mainly based on mining and agriculture.

The best time to visit Kazakhstan is from May to September. July, August and September are the best months for hiking in the mountains.

Located in the heart of the Kazakh steppes, the country’s capital since 1998 has been renamed Nursultan in honor of the first president who remained in power for 30 years after the country’s independence.

A modern city with more or less cutting-edge contemporary buildings, it reminds of futuristic cities such as Dubai or Las Vegas. After the World Expo in 2017, the city has become even more popular in the world.

Almaty

Former capital and most populous city of Kazakhstan (2019 estimate: 1,854,656 inhabitants), Almaty is located in the southeast of the country. The name of the city means “city of apples” because of the many orchards in the area, and more importantly, from the legend that the world’s first apples came from the apple trees in this region.

Located in the northern part of the Tian-Shan mountain range, the snow-capped peaks are clearly visible from Almaty. Because of its mountainous location, the city is often affected by earthquakes, which is one of the main reasons for the relocation of the capital to Astana.

Due to the unusual rock formations, the canyon is known by different names. For example, the Castle Valley is an uncommon rock formation that can be seen when visiting the canyon. Many locals come to camp here and stay overnight during the summer.

The cradle of Soviet space exploration, Baikonur is a must-see attraction for space enthusiasts. It was secretly created in the 1950s by the Soviets and was used as a launch pad to send the first cosmonaut into space.

The Baikonur Space Center is still an important launch facility and it is possible to attend one of them by booking in advance. Don’t forget to visit the great space museum, where you can see exhibitions of Yuri Gagarin and other cosmonauts.
