The capital of the country is Dushanbe. The Tajik capital was called Stalinabad between 1929 and 1961.

The country’s surface area is 143,000 km2 (55,212 sq mi), which ranks it 96th in the world, and it has a population of 8,873,669 (2020 data).

Tajikistan shares borders with Kyrgyzstan, China, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

Tajikistan is the smallest country in Central Asia and 93% of its territory is covered by mountains. The highest peak in the country is Ismail Samani with an altitude of 7,495 m (24,590 ft).

The Amu Darya River is the main river of the country and used to flow into the Aral Sea through other Central Asian countries. This river is fed by the glaciers of the high Pamir mountains.

The most visited cities are Dushanbe, Istaravshan, Khodjand and Punjikent.

The best time to visit the country is between April and October. But for hiking in the Pamir Mountains and Fan Mountains, July is the best time.

The capital of the country since the Soviet era, the name Dushanbe has a Persian origin meaning “Monday” (dou for “two” and shambeh for “day”, literally second day), as there used to be a popular market there every Monday.

The city is pleasant to visit on foot. It is home to several must-see sights such as the Green Market, the historical monument of Ismail Samani (Persian dynasty), the National Museum and many more.

the Fan Mountains and its lakes

Located in the northern part of the country, not far from the city of Punjikent, the Fan (or Fansky) Mountains are a great place for trekking and hiking lovers.

The turquoise water lakes are breathtaking and are surrounded by mountains over 5,000 meters high (16,400 ft). A real treat for the eyes. Setting up a tent around these lakes to spend the night is pure happiness in the middle of gorgeous nature.

The Pamir Trail

The legendary Pamir Trail is very popular in Tajikistan. It was historically used by the Silk Road caravans and currently serves as the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Apart from its winding roads and mountainous landscapes, this valley has several mountain villages to explore and experience the local rural life. Every Saturdays a large market is held where you can mingle with locals and Afghans.

Panjakent

The city of Panjakent is one of the most ancient cities in Central Asia, located on the banks of the Zarafshan River. With its numerous wall paintings discovered during archaeological excavations, the city is now listed as a UNESCO cultural heritage site.

Thanks to its geographical location close to the city of Samarkand, the city is ideal to reach the Fan Mountains, a must for trekking lovers who visit the region.
