The Republic of Uzbekistan
The capital of the country is Tashkent.
Surrounded by Kazakhstan to the west and north, Kyrgyzstan to the east, Tajikistan to the southeast, Turkmenistan to the south and Turkmenistan to the southwest, Uzbekistan is a country mainly covered by desert. The largest desert spanning most of the country is called Kyzylkoum, literally “red sand”, it also extends into some of the neighboring countries.
Uzbekistan is the most populous country in Central Asia (over 35,000,000 inhabitants in September 2021). It is mainly home to Uzbeks (80%) as well as Russians, Kazakhs, Tajiks and Koreans.

The most popular cities visited by travelers are Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Tashkent.

The official language in Uzbekistan is Uzbek. Russian and Tajik are often used among the population.

The local currency is the soum, used since July 1, 1994.
The best time to visit the country is during spring and fall.

According to some reports, the word Bukhara meant “wealthy place”, mostly because of its prominent location on the Silk Road between China and Iran. A few dozen of perfectly preserved caravanserais bear witness to this past.

Besides these caravanserais, Bukhara has preserved several mosques, minarets and madrasas (old Koranic schools) that can be visited.

The city is known as an open-air museum and is one of the must-see places in Uzbekistan. Thanks to its inner city, known as Itchan Kala, Khiva has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1990.

Surrounded by high defensive walls, the city of Itchan Kala lets you travel back in time. Strolling through the illuminated streets of the city in the evening is the best way to get a feel for the special charm of this authentic city.

The capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan since 1930. Tashkent is a former USSR city and has many buildings from the Soviet era. The modern city has wide streets and extensive parks.

Apart from its covered markets in the heart of the city, Tashkent also has a famous metro line with beautifully decorated stations. Each of these stations represents a different aspect of the Uzbek culture.
